Body mass index, or BMI, is a  process to find out if you are at a healthy weight according to your height. BMI is a measurement based on your weight and height. Generally, the greater the number, the more body fat a person may have. How do you calculate BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number that depends on the weight and height of a person. The BMI is calculated as the body weight divided by the square of the body height and expressed in units of kg/m2, where weight in kilogram and height in meters. BMI = Weight (kg)/Height (m)2. For example, A BMI of 25 means 25kg/m2.

BMI provides simple numeric measures of a person’s fatness or thinness, allowing health professionals to find out weight problems of patients. BMI is a technique to measure the amount of tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bones) in a person and then classifies that person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on that number. It is a common method of categorizing a person according to body weight and their height.

BMI is used to classify different weight groups in adults 20 years old or older. The same groups apply to both men and women.

Underweight: BMI is less than 18.5

Normal weight: BMI is 18.5 to 24.9

Overweight: BMI is 25 to 29.9

Obese: BMI is 30 or more

How to calculate BMI in children?

Different parameters are used to calculate BMI. Because of their continuous growth and maturity rate, It is complex to calculate overweight or obesity in children and teenagers,  It is calculated in the same way as adults but then compared to typical values for other children of the same age.

A child having less than 5th percentile is classified as underweight and above the 95th percentile is categorized as obese.
