When our kidneys are healthy, they clean our blood. They also make hormones that keep strong bones and healthy blood. When our kidneys fail, we need treatment to replace the work our kidneys used to do. Untill and unless we have a kidney transplant, we will need a treatment called dialysis.
Why do we need Dialysis?
If Kidneys are not working properly – for example, if we have advanced chronic kidney disease (kidney failure) – the kidneys may not be able to clean the blood properly. Waste products and fluid for body can build up to dangerous levels.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Kidneys are damaged and losing their ability to keep us healthy by filtering blood. In the early stages of such kind of disease, most people do not have symptoms. But as kidney disease gets worse, wastes can build up in our blood and make us feel sick. It may develop other problems, like high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones, poor nutritional health, and nerve damage. Because kidneys play a vital role to so many of the body's functions, kidney disease also increases our risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. While these problems may happen gradually and without any symptoms, it can lead to kidney failure, which can appear without warning. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a kidney transplant is needed to stay healthy and alive.
Dialysis is the process of removing excess water, solutes, and toxins from the blood in people who is suffering from kidneys diseases it can no longer perform any functions naturally. Its referred to as renal replacement therapy.
Importance of Dialysis
Dialysis helps people to live a longer and healthier life after the kidney fails. When dialysis is performed at regular intervals, then it must be accompanied by the medications as well under doctor’s supervision
Three types of dialysis are:-
The 3 main types of dialysis are: in-center hemodialysis, home hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis.
Each dialysis has its pros and cons. It is important to remember that even once if we choose a type of dialysis, we always have the option to change it
In-center hemodialysis is when a person goes to a dialysis center for their hemodialysis treatment.
In hemodialysis, blood is pumped out of the body after filtered through a machine and returned to the body through the tubes that connect the patient to the machine.
In Peritoneal dialysis, a catheter is implanted in the patient’s stomach through which the dialysate is circulated. It absorbs all the waste from our body.
Advantages of Dialysis
Dialysis can be carried out even at home.
Peritoneal dialysis is a comfortable method of dialysis it is easy to use.
The equipment used in peritoneal dialysis is less bulky and its easy to carry along with the patient.
Unlike peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis is not be carried out every day.
Dialysis is needed for a healthy living for a person suffering from Kidney diseases and it must be performed under doctor's guidance supervision and proper medical care
