Calcium deficiency is undoubtedly a potential cause for concern worldwide. In India only, billions of people are suffering from calcium deficiency and worst part is that many of them do not even know that. Calcium deficiency can cause serious threat on health if not detected and treated on time. It may lead to brittle bones which may further cause bones fractures or bone related problems such as rickets, osteoporosis and osteopenia. Enough amount of calcium is required to support body’s skeletal structure and teeth. 99 percent of the calcium is used by the bone and teeth and rest is used in other functions like muscle contraction, blood vessel contraction etc. So, it is important for us to have enough calcium to prevent complexities. Calcium deficiency can range from mild to chronic and may cause metabolic alterations or potential dysfunctions in the body.
Unfortunately, calcium, the most essential minerals cannot be produced by the body on its own, that is why it should be obtained through dietary sources. National Institutes of Health recommend people from 19-50 years of age to have at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day and people above 51-70 years of age to have 1200 milligrams per day. Daily consuming the specified yet little amount of calcium can prevent you from severe consequences.
When your body lacks calcium, it starts showing some common minor to major symptoms such as- Numbness, tingling fingers, lethargy, poor appetite, muscle cramps, brittle finger nails, chest tightening, difficulty swallowing, fatigue, coarse hair, mental confusion, voice changes, delayed development, anxiety, backache, fracture of spine, gradual loss of height, stooped postures, fainting ,etc. Our body continuously gives signals and shows symptoms so it is important for us to be more vigilant about the changes in the body.
1. Weak and brittle nails-
People with calcium deficiency are often found with weak, chipped and brittle nails. So it is important to keep your eye on your nail’s health. As nail can clearly show whether you are calcium deficient or not. In case if you observe chipped nail or weak nail, increase your calcium consumption by having more dairy products, fish, nuts, figs, green and leafy vegetables etc.
2. Muscle cramps-
Muscle cramps are the most terrible and painful experience, people go through. It is one of the common symptoms of calcium deficient body. Calcium deficiency can cause muscle tightening, contraction, pain and discomfort. So next time, if you go through muscle cramps, do not forget to check your calcium level.
3. Dental cavities-
Calcium deficiency can cause severe problems to your teeth. Deficiency can cause your teeth weaker and brittle and put you at risk of cavities. So add more dairy products and calcium rich foods to keep your teeth strong.
4. Poor bone density-
One of the serious threats your body experience due to lack of calcium is, poor bone density. It makes your bone weak and brittle and also increases your chances of getting osteoporosis. Calcium deficiency can cause serious impact on your bone so it is imperative to take care of your calcium consumption.
Calcium level is highly associated with your sound sleep. If you body is lacking calcium it may leave you restless at night. Calcium helps your body produce hormones that induce sleep. So ensure you take enough calcium to get sound sleep.
