What Causes Epilepsy? Know More About It

Epilepsy is the second most abnormal neurological condition that affects one-sixth of the Indian population. Based on statistics 14 people per 1000 are susceptible to develop epilepsy in which children and young adults are at higher risk. According to the World Health Organization, 12 million people affected with epilepsy reside in India and 95% of them do not receive any sort of treatment. Epilepsy is a disease of the nervous system that does not only adversely affect the health of the victim but can also affect the educational, professional, and married life of the affected person.

• Performing repetitive movements

• Shaking
• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• Biting of the tongue
• Loss of consciousness
 
What are the reasons/causes of epilepsy?
There are various reasons which may contribute to seizure. Some of them are-
• High fever
• Head trauma/ injury
• Very low blood sugar
• Alcohol withdrawal
• Tumor
• Stroke
• Brain hemorrhage
• Birth injury
 
What triggers an epileptic seizure?
There are some reported factors that highly trigger epilepsy are-
• Lack of sleep
• Illness or fever
• Stress
• Bright lights, flashing lights, or patterns
• Caffeine, alcohol, medicines, or drugs
• Skipping meals, overeating, or certain food ingredients
 
When to Seek Medical Help for Epilepsy?
You are recommended to visit a doctor if you or anyone of you know to experience these symptoms.
1) A first seizure
2) A seizure that continues for more than 5 minutes 
3) Breathing difficulty 
4) Persistent confusion or unconsciousness 
5) Injuries during a seizure
 
Self-Care at Home for Epilepsy
In case a seizure occurs, people nearby the victim can help him/her prevent injuries or danger by following certain tips.
• Put a pillow below the person's head.
• Loosen the dress.
• Turn the person on his or her side.
• Do not place anything in the mouth.
• Observe the victim’s behavior, activity, and seizure duration. It can help doctors identify the type of seizure.
