What is a bone tumor?
Bone tumors occur in your bone. When cells divide abnormally and uncontrollably, they start collecting a mass or lump of the tissues. This mass or lump of unhealthy tissues is called the bone tumor. When the tumor grows, it starts replacing healthy tissues from unhealthy tissues. These tumors can be cancerous or non-cancerous.
The non-cancerous tumor does not expand and stays at a single place. The cancerous tumor can be considered as a fatal that can cause cancer which grows uncontrollably and replaces unhealthy tissues with healthy tissues.
Types of non-cancerous bone tumors-
Osteochondromas– Osteochondromas are the most common non-cancerous tumor that accounts 35 to 40% of all tumors. It especially occurs between the ages of 13 to 19. It mostly forms in thighbones, the lower leg bone or upper arm bone.


Nonossifying fibroma unicameral- This tumors are found as a bone cyst. It usually forms in the leg and occurs mostly in children and teenagers.
Giant cell tumors- As the name indicates it grows aggressively and usually found in the rounded end of the bone. These are less common than other tumors.
Enchondroma- This tumor grows inside the bone marrow. It occurs in children and persists as adults.

Types of cancerous bone tumors–
They have been considered as a secondary bone tumor. The most common cancerous tumors are-
Osteosarcoma- It occurs mostly in children and teenagers and the most common type of bone cancer. It usually develops in hip, shoulder or knee.It grows rapidly and spreads to other parts of the body.
Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (ESFTs)- It grows in the cavities of the bone. And occurs in legs (long bones), pelvis, backbone, ribs, upper arms, and the skull. It mostly affects the children under 5 years old. Chondrosarcoma-Middle-aged people and older adults are more prone to develop this tumor. It usually develops in the hips, shoulders, and pelvis.


Notes-Bone tumors can also affect other parts of the body such as-
• kidney
• breast
• prostate
• lung
• thyroid gland
What are the causes of bone tumors?
Though the exact causes are still unknown, researchers suggest that it may develop due to –
1. Genetics
2. Injuries to bones
3. Radiation treatment
4. High doses drug
5. Bone fracture
6. Metal implants
What are the symptoms of bone tumor?
1. Dull pain to severe pain
2. Swelling around bones
3. Night Sweats
4. Fever
5. Difficult walking
6. Muscle weakness
7. Weakness in the arms and legs
8. Dizziness
9. Fatigue
The tumor is a medical condition that should not be avoided and treated on time.


Treatment- Your treatment will be based on the type, location, and size of the tumor. Non-cancerous treatment can regrow, reoccur and can turn into cancer.

Some Useful Tips to Prevent Bone tumor
• Keep yourself away from negative lifestyle habits such as smoking or alcohol.
• Tobacco consumption also increases the chances of the tumor.Avoid consuming it.
• Eat full of nutrients foods and eat the low-fat diet.
• Take low-calorie food.
• Consuming fresh fruit and vegetables also lowers the risk of developing the tumor.
• Reduce intake of saturated fat and red meat if it is very high.
• Physical exercise and yoga are most effective way to prevent the certain medical condition. It improves blood circulation and limits the growth of the tumor.
• Consult doctors for screening and detection of the condition before it spreads.
