A cleft lip is the opening or break of the upper lip that occurs when the developing face structures in an unborn baby do not close completely. A cleft lip may be unilateral or bilateral. A cleft lip child may also experience cleft mouth. During the first 6 to 10 weeks of pregnancy, the baby’s bones and skin in the upper jaw, nose, and mouth usually come together to form the upper mouth and upper lip. Cleft occurs when parts of the lip or palate do not merge completely. Clefts are usually found at birth time. Sometimes doctors can see on prenatal ultrasound. Without a cleft lip, a cleft palate is harder to see. Doctors usually find a cleft palate when they look and feel the baby’s mouth during the first examination of the newborn. Cleft is usually treated through surgery. Other treatments may also be required, such as speech therapy and dental care.
